Making Moves

Dear members, dreamers, and visionaries,

Happy spring! Here's an update on some of the things we've been up to:

Formalizing Structures:

February was a big month for us. We became fiscally sponsored by the Northern California Land Trust (NCLT) and we got our first grant (see info below about granting event on 4/15)! Also, the Permanent Real Estate Coop that we've been working on with the Sustainable Economies Law Center (SELC) was officially incorporated by the State of California on Feb. 27. We will be looking for Board members soon, so if you are interested in learning more, email Lina at lina.buffington@gmail.com

Starting Conversations

We started conversations with the Ecovillagers Alliance on the East Coast, whose model is similar to PREC, and participated in an Afrikatown Tour and Land Liberation Strategy Session closer to home, in West Oakland.

Organizing Collective Updates

Deseree Fontenot just graduated with a Master's degree in Social Transformation and is starting a 6 month farming apprenticeship this month at U.C. Santa Cruz's Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems!

Lina Buffington has hosted two meetups with Black Land Matters and spent the month of February on her first scouting tour of Costa Rica, including staying at a black ex pat-owned guest house. Read more on her travel blog.

As of January, Marissa Ashkar is now employed part-time at the Northern California Land Trust as the Resident Organizer, which includes a few hours towards POCSHN work! If you are interested in joining the NCLT board, please contact her at marissa.ashkar@nclt.org

If you are interested in learning more about our Organizing Collective and are able to dedicate 5-10 hours/month, please email ticatavi@gmail.com We do outreach, research, plan events, all in service of supporting forming and existing POC-centered cooperative housing communities. Our next meeting is this Sunday (Easter), 4-6pm.
